The scent of scorched ink and warm copper lingered in the air, a familiar haze of industry that clung to the walls of Talia Mafek’s dorm like incense. Pale light from her desk lamp bathed the room in a golden hue, catching the soft swirling shimmer of unbound Dust drifting lazily in the air—a hazard she’d long since learned to ignore.
Talia sat cross-legged on her bed, her work spread in methodical layers across the sheets. In one hand, she held a thin, half-completed Dust card between gloved fingers. The other hovered above it, her palm just an inch from the card’s surface. Her eyes narrowed with quiet focus. With a subtle glow, a sigil—complex and shifting—began to etch itself into the fibers of the card, born from her Semblance and stabilized by the pre-threaded Dust lines she’d layered earlier that afternoon. The ink sparked once, briefly unstable, but she didn’t flinch.
“I know,” she murmured gently, as if to the card itself. “Too much wind Dust in that one. You’ll throw off the storm arc if I don’t balance you.”
She reached for a vial of finely ground Dust from a small rack by her nightstand—labeled in her own precise handwriting: Amber Drift. Using a specialized injector, she carefully fed the Dust into the hollow edge of the card, letting it flow through the sigil’s capillary channels until the glyph settled. Stable. She nodded once, satisfied.
Nearby, the Anubis Frame lay open on a maintenance rack, its sleek lines spread wide, exposing the core systems like a dissected bird of prey. Tiny lights blinked across its control panel, cycling through calibration data as Talia adjusted the Dust output flow. Her latest combat simulations had shown a margin of delay when channeling dual summons and activating a glyph in tandem—unacceptable in a real duel. She traced her finger along a glowing conduit and adjusted the filter valve, watching the panel’s response update in real time.
Outside the window, the lights of Beacon’s tower twinkled. Somewhere down the hall, she heard the laughter of teammates. Talia paused, letting the moment stretch. Then she gently pressed her next blank card against her palm, eyes soft but purposeful.
“Alright,” she whispered with a faint smile. “Next draw.”
The sigil began to glow again.
