A small faunus woman wearing black pinstripe pants and a blood red blouse was a familiar sight in the building to most who worked there. Pearl moved through the warehouse like she owned the place, an air of confidence around her as the workers recognized who she was. She wore a smile as her eyes moved from person to person, a touch more honey to her amber eyes than normal. They were her people and she despite wear they were on the ladder compared to her, she held some love for them. She had fought and bled for some of them directly. Without them her plans wouldn't see the light of day.

Men and women, faunus and humans alike busied themselves around the warehouse, their voices a low din as they worked. One by one the contents of crates and boxes to be shipped out tonight were checked and double checked to make sure their contents matched what was on the company's shipping manifests. Weapons, dust, pharmaceuticals, and even foods that were hard to come by outside of the main cities were the most common things that went through this warehouse. This particular shipment didn't need her attention. Very few ever did. There were more capable people that kept everything running flawlessly.

Despite the satisfied feeling in her chest from seeing her people working like a well oiled machine, her visit had little to do with business. No, instead she was here waiting to meet an acquaintance who she'd once helped make a new weapon for. Jim Lavay, one of the few students she was glad she'd never crossed blades with. He was never a slouch, and even before he'd graduated he'd have been able to hold his own against some rogue huntsmen. Even now with a couple years of Beacon under her belt on top of her previous experience she wasn't certain of who would win if they came to blows. It would be better if they never did. He was a good man and nothing good would come from a fight between them.

Pearl leaned back against the security door that lead to the workshop waiting for the huntsman in question to show. It would be a pleasant distraction to work on a weapon of that caliber again. A way to stimulate her mind over something besides some of the unpleasant realities of her business. Quietly hiring huntsmen under the table was a liability, and none of them were loyal... They needed some on the roster that would do their part, and maybe even believe in what she was trying to do. The fox sighed and held a cigarette between her lips as she lit it. It was unlikely, but maybe Jim contacting her was fate giving her what she needed.

Sitting on the floor of his sister’s living room Jim had his scroll expanded out into it’s larger screen. His right hand flipping through some searches while his left held a pencil idly tapping away on a blank piece of paper. “Damnit…” He’d mumble to himself before a long sigh. Leaning his head back trying to break the mental block he thought about his last excursion.

It had been a simple enough mission. Jim was escorting some contractors trying to do some sciency-geological stuff. There was some scare about something and these guys needed to go out into the field. The intellectual details were lost on him, but it was a low traffic area. The worst thing they came across was a pack of beowolves which on his own would have been nothing. However, the team was scattered out in a clearing and Jim found himself sprinting from side to side. At one point one of the beasts was leaping for some poor defenseless lady and in a last second maneuver he threw his massive great sword. It saved the woman, but it cleaved the creature and the giant tree behind it.

Returning to the present he knew in that moment that to be a truly effective huntsmen he needed some sort of ranged weapon. Fortunately, he was able to get in touch with the woman who helped rebuild his sword. Unfortunately, his meeting was in… “Oh shit!” He’d say looking at the scroll. His meeting was in like 10 minutes and he had yet to get a single real idea on paper.

Sprinting out the door Jim hopped on his motorcycle and sped like a Nevermore out of hell towards their meet up spot. Some sort of warehouse or logistics place Jim really didn’t know for sure. Though it almost sounded as if Pearl owned it or at the very least managed it. None of which mattered now as he looked at the time at a red light. “Crap…” Luck was on his side however as there wasn’t a cop in sight and the roads were fairly clear. So just at the minute struck he rolled up to the lot.

Jumping off the bike and hustling towards the workshop he’d greet Pearl with a friendly wave. “Heeeyy! It’s so good to see you!” It was clear if she had been looking that his pace was hurried. At least he’d looked semi-presentable as he was still in his usual attire from earlier. That massive sword that the pair had built together slung across his back. “I appreciate you meeting me on such short notice. Umm, sorry if I’m a couple minutes late.” He’d laugh lightly to himself while holding a hand out. Despite being usually a hugger he decided to go the professional or at least the slightly more subtle route today since Pearl was nice enough to help him out... again.

A boisterous and friendly call pulled her attention from the cherry flavored smoke and the ember burning at the end of her cigarette. Pearl turned her head as she exhaled a cloud away from Jim's direction. Black gloved fingers pushed her sleeve up before snuffing the ember out on her metal wrist with a quick twist. A hint of pain crawled up her arm but it never showed on her face. Instead there was a welcoming smile on her face as she quickly stowed away her cigarette and met his offered hand with her steel grip. “It's been a long time since we've talked, so it's not much more to wait a couple more minutes. I hope the huntsman life has been treating you well, Jim.”

As she pulled her hand away, she couldn't help but wonder if he noticed the difference in her grip, or that she could actually wear sleeves with her prosthetics. Last time they'd actually talked she'd still had her old arm and hand, clunky and overly large steel limbs prone to breaking down. It hadn't hindered her in the making of the weapon she saw on his back though. What had he named it again? It was rare that someone else got to name something she had worked on. Her pride usually wouldn't let her, but the weapon had been such an undertaking for him that she couldn't take that from him. It had been something poetic, something fitting.

Pearl turned away and waved her right hand over the security scanner. A two-toned beep followed by the sound of a lock clicking let the pair know the door was open. “Our workshop's downstairs and under things like the break room and managers office, so we won't be able to fire off any rounds, but we should be able to look over some schematics to come up with some ideas.” She stepped through the door and began to lead the way through a well maintained stairway. Whether he wanted to come up with modifications to his weapon or make a brand new one she'd have what he needed. They'd discuss how he'd pay her back later.

A smile held firm on his face as they shook hands. It felt a little strange being so professional, but perhaps that was how he was supposed to act these days. Looking down he'd take some note of the sleek new design. However, his less than amazing memory. Plus, the fact he was pretty sure bring up someone prosthetic in the first minute of seeing them again was poor form. Jim chose to hold any comments for later and instead just simply responded to her introduction. "Yeah, it's going alright. Nothing too crazy yet, heh not that I'm complaining believe it or not." Of course, he had racked up a bit of a reputation for being over the top and gung-ho in his time as Beacon so she may or may not believe that comment. "...and yeah, sorry about that. I'm terrible at keeping in touch. It's something I'm hoping to get better at."

With that out of the way Jim would follow Pearl into the building. Looking around on his way he'd drop a couple idle comments along the line of... "Nice operation you have here." Beyond that he would regale her of his recent expedition where he escorted the scientists. The way that it had all happened and why he really did need something with a little more range.

"...so yeah, as much fun as it is heaving this beast at something. It's not exactly efficient. I was thinking some sort of a side arm. Maybe like a shotgun? I'm sure if you remember at all. I’m not exactly exaggerating when I say I’m the best crack shot on Remnant, so I figure that might be the sweet spot right there." He'd end up finishing by the time they made their way down to the workshop. "Whatcha think, if I remember you use something kinda similar right? Big ass sword in one hand a nice 'lil.'" He rather playfully added some air quotes along with that last word. "...shotgun in the other? Do you feel like that is able to kinda cover all bases?" Despite being the older and more experienced of the two he wasn't about to get all high and mighty. If there was one single way that he had matured it was respecting everyone individually for their own experiences and abilities.

As the fox lead the way down the stairs and through the hallway towards the workshop she took in every detail Jim had to share. While the kind words about about her business were brushed aside with her own polite words of appreciation, what he had to say about his mission held her interest. He was a capable huntsman, and able to handle threats for more dangerous than a pack of beowolves, but the most dangerous thing about the grimm had never been the gargantuan ones hidden beneath the earth and waves, or soaring well above the clouds. It was the fact they were innumerable. Even all the huntsmen in the world couldn't protect ever settlement even if they tried to organize such a defense.

“Citrine Bevel usually fills the role of my primary range weapon as well, but you're not wrong that I sometimes use a secondary weapon if the situation calls for it.” Another door, another wave of her hand and the workshop lay before them. A sharp eye would see the similarities to a Beacon workshop in many ways, from the equipment available for the fabricating and machining of parts, to the raw materials available, and even the several workstations that had weapons and gear in various stages of assembly or disrepair. Two key differences was the large rack of numerous completed weapons covering the entirety of one wall that was behind a hardlight security barrier and the amount of floor space available so people could move comfortably while others worked.

“It's a recent construction based off something I was familiar with and has everything we might need.” A moment after Pearl flipped a switch the sound of ventilation fans overhead could be heard, though they were a dull buzz compared to the ear ringing roar that other workshops often had overhead. “If you have a design in mind, I can set you loose, or we can bring up one of the monitors and go over some of the designs I've used or picked up from others.”

Nodding along with her response Jim would quickly throw in one of his own. "Yeah exactly, that's why I was thinking something light. At this point I couldn't imagine making another drastic change to my main weapon. Sure, it's not perfect, but as you said it suits my needs the vast majority of the time. That said the changes we did make before were perfect. The dust really helps crank those strikes to a whole new level!" A little chuckle would follow the comment as he added it a far more quietly spoken. "That said I do miss my team for filling some of my... weaker areas." The comment was truthful, but also said in jest as he made no attempts to hide the fact that he would not have been so successful at Beacon without them. In fact, there was a real chance he may have been outright dead were it not for Ava and Shana in particular. Fortunately, though even the most stubborn of people can slowly learn the error of their ways.

As they entered the room, he would look over the impressive and rather familiar lay out. Naturally, Jim's eyes would be primarily drawn to the weapon's display. "Whoa..." He'd say in a very impressed manner. "...damn girl you've done some work in here!" Again, his tone would be nothing but respectful. At least, in his own unique way.

When Pearl drew his attention back Jim would again find himself laughing lightly. "Ehh, yes and no. I had a couple idea, but I ended up sitting there for an hour and nothing but a blank pad." As he spoke, he'd look up to see the ventilation and then back down to the shorter Faunus. "...so yeah, if you've got some basic schematics already plugged in that would probably help me out a lot in narrowing things down." Crossing his arms, he'd find himself looking around again and he'd end up interjecting one more time before she got started. "Hey, if you don't mind me asking. How long have you had this place? I know we weren't that close at Beacon, but you've got a hell of an operation going on here." He couldn't help a light joke. "Sure, hope you got some solid middle manages to watch after the place while you're out at school kicking ass." By the time he was finished he'd be standing next to her, and in a very him fashion he'd give her a tiny nudge. Hoping that she not only knew he was messing around, but also to show that he was genuinely impressed.

“It's strange to hear you talk about weaknesses considering your reputation. I suppose that is what a team should be good for.” Her brow knit together in thought, the conversation a firm reminder of Felix's offer. She was in her third year and had shirked off every attempt by her peers to get her on a team. So far she'd done the same to him, but not for the same reason. It was true that her being on their team would be far more to Telu and Felix's benefit, but maybe he was right that she could learn something too. It was a distracting thought that she brushed away as Jim kept talking.

“I've only made two of the ones you see in here. Most are made by some of our technicians or are taken from recovered shipments and repaired.” Pearl lifted her hand to point at a pair of weapons down by the end. The first looked like a simple longsword meant to be wielded in two hands. A sharp eye would be able to see signs of where the blade was segmented. A central split down the center and several down either side of the blade originating from the central split. The other weapon resembled a simple steel rod the length of an extended asp baton.

“Actually I inherited control of the company prior to enrolling at Beacon.” Pearl stopped at one of the workstations and turned on the schematic display. Her finger moved quickly across the screen navigating through to a certain set of schematics. Her focus was almost entirely on the screen where several shotgun schematics were now visible. “Thankfully most of the people who ran things before I inherited it stayed on and have kept things running smoothly. And when I have had an idea, they have implemented them rather seamlessly as long as they are possible.”

A quick tap of her fingers turned on a holographic display of one of the shotguns. A short single barrel combat shotgun with a small under-barrel bayonet. “This is probably the lightest one I have, collapsible to the size of a flask or novel. Doesn't hold much ammo though. The more you tell me about what you need though, the more likely we can figure something out.”

"Heh..." Jim couldn't help but to laugh at that comment. "...don't go telling everyone I said that. Like I said I got a reputation to uphold." Following the comment with a grin and a playful wink before turning back to the weapon case. Listening as she spoke about the ones; she'd made he'd look them over as best as he could through the barrier. He would notice the small details on the blade. Though not much more about the baton which meant it was probably the most lethal thing up there in his experience. "Nice, nice. They look awesome."

With that Jim would rejoin the Faunus and look up at the screen as she started to thumb through it. "Nice, that's pretty awesome though and jokes aside that's no small feat to manage a business and the Academy. Not to mention standing out like you do." The comment didn't have a smile or chuckle attached to it as he was being genuine. Not even in a brown nose, trying to get a better weapon from her, way either. "Hell, I struggled just to get my work done while working over nights at a logistics place, but then again the schoolwork part of the academy was never much of my strong suit." That comment on the other hand was quickly followed by a little laughter.

Of course, when it came time to talk about the actual reason for his being here, he'd nod. "Yeah, sorry... easily distracted. Anyway..." Looking up he'd see the schematic it wasn't a bad start, but he was looking for maybe something with a little more stopping power. So, holding his hands about a foot and a half away from each other he'd go into as best detail as he could. "Alright, so I'm thinking something about this big or so. Maybe if would compress I was probably going to stow it on the back of my belt. As I usually have a drop bag on both my hips already and well obviously." He'd point to his sword. "This here... I don't need a ton of round, but I need something that can reliably put a small Grimm down at medium or close range." Taking a moment, he'd then add in. "...that said I do want it one-handable so I don't have to drop the sword, but weight isn't really an issue as I use this in one hand sometimes too. However, especially with some of the bonier Grimm could be a nice combo if they parry me. Draw and shoot at point-blank type deal." He was never much good at this, so he'd smile a little nervously hoping he was properly relaying his desires.

“It's exhausting most days, and I still hardly involve myself directly with the running of the company. There's just certain tasks that require my involvement these days.” Managing her life between what was once Carmine's business and her studies at Beacon had become a balancing act that was dangerously close to tipping too far in one direction. There were solutions to her problems. As long as her professors were willing to work with her due to her grades staying high, she'd have time to find them. And Jim could actually be such a solution. Though if he had a clear idea of what he needed, he likely already had another bounty lined up.

An idea he was willing to share. It was a rough measurement looking at the space between his hands, but it was enough to remove some of the shotguns more fit for a sidearm. Jim Lavay was a big man known for his strength. He didn't need something dainty and light. Which meant, despite the sheer differences in their frame, he needed something more like what she preferred from a shotgun. As he shared more of what he was looking for, she narrowed down her search through the schematics. Until it was narrowed down to three base forms.

“So, we've narrowed it down to three. All of them have severe stopping power depending on the type of shells and slugs you decide to carry.” A single barreled shotgun with a blade on either side of the barrel was displayed in holographic format in front of them. It was occasionally shifting between two forms. “The first I doubt will be your pick, but it's a pretty standard combination weapon shifting between a bladed shotgun and a two handed sword a bit smaller than what you currently carry.”

“The second is similar to a design I've used pretty often. It's not my favorite though. In it's double barrel form, it doesn't use standard rounds or slugs, but instead dust charges in the grip and stock. This allows for far more shots with comparable firepower to standard slugs, but you're not reloading it in a fight. The dust charges would need to be removed after. It does have a secondary form though.” The new gun shifted to a more standard pump shotgun look. “It uses standard rounds and slugs like this but is a little larger. It's not meant for one handed use, but for you, I doubt that would be a problem.”

“And lastly, one of my favorites.” The last weapon was displayed before them, this one getting a smile out of the fox. The first form looked compact and almost box-like. Small enough that it would fit across the small of her back, but no visible firing method. “This one is a demon, and contained like one. Two forms, one being the carried form which it can rapidly transform from. The other-” Her finger tapped and in the place of the box was a triple barrel shotgun with a blade extending from the each barrel. “is a breach load tri-barreled shotgun capable of firing a single shot or all three at once, it's able to withstand several dust types at once, has the capability of using dust charges like the second I showed you.” Excitement was creeping into her voice as she described the one in front of them. “This one can put down a rogue huntsman or large grimm if you can handle firing it, but you're a Lavay. Of course you can.”

Watching the screen as each of the three options went by Jim tried really hard to not only take this seriously. Her also took a moment to really envision each of those guns in his hand. More than that in fact. In his hands during a fight. How could he use each one to weave it in with his style? How would he draw and reload it if required?

The first option had the perk of also being a blade which meant that even if he expended the ammo, he could get some use out of it. Though he had dual wielded in the past and as fun as that was for a primary, he discovered during his time at Beacon it wasn't his favorite. No, this needed to be a secondary weapon that would be used when needed. So, with that in mind he'd think over the middle choice. The double barrel had a classic aesthetic that he respected. The fact that it was dust based meant that reloading wouldn't be an issue. Which was important unless he wanted to look like a lunatic juggling his weapons around. So thus far that one was in the lead.

At least it was until that final beast came around and Jim instantly fell in love with it. Of course, it helped that Pearl sold it well, but damn was it pretty. Pretty and lethal! It reminded him of Ava's shot gun that she got later in their schooling except this one was somehow even more bad ass. The fact that it would swap modes was nice too. Meant that if he had multiple targets at a distant, he could quick aim both. A skill he would admittedly have to work on. However, even better he just imagined using all three at once in that example he gave earlier. Have a tougher or smarter Grimm that could parry and block just to eat this 'Demon' to the face. "Hell yeah!" He'd finally say out loud.

"That's the one. No questions about it." On top of everything he had already though of the fact that it was also easy to store was just the cherry on the cake. "You rock Pearl..." Walking around the display and looking closer at the schematics Jim would have a giant ass grin on his face. "...aside from obviously paying you for this. If there is anything I can do to return the favor lemme know." He'd then chuckle. "All up to date on your patrols and bounties and what not?" With a smile he’d turn back to her. “Joke’s aside I really appreciate this and at the very least drinks’ll be on me.” Okay maybe jokes weren’t entirely aside, but it was tough when he was this excited.

His reaction filled the small woman with pride. It was one thing to convince someone which weapon would work best for them, but to get them excited for a design, especially one she'd made was something else. “I had a feeling you'd like the Chimera base even before I shared my thoughts on it. It's one of my designs though, so clearly I'm more than a little biased on how good I think it is.” The sound of metal fingers tapping followed her words and the image of the gun split into component parts, a schematic detailing each individual screw and gear.

Pearl hesitated to say more after Jim talked about paying her back for this. When she wished to be, she could be stoic and wear a practiced poker-face. Her ears could still give her away at times, and now might have been just such a time if Jim recognized the slight tilt backwards they took. The subject of payment wasn't necessarily one she had wanted to broach in this case. The Chimera even in the most standard form was an expensive weapon to make, more-so she hadn't entirely been meaning to help him out of the goodness in her heart. There were questions she had wanted to ask.

“About that, the base design is still an expensive design. I imagine you'll want to look into personal modifications to suit your needs, as a weapon designed for me won't necessarily be perfect for you.” The pride and excitement from before bled from her voice. Pearl stood up straight and took a half-step back away from the workstation. “I had also been meaning to ask what bounties or other huntsman jobs you've got lined up? Part of the reason I agreed so readily to help out was to have the opportunity to speak with you about that in the first place.”

Laughing lightly at her initial comment for a moment he eventually responded. "I mean did you really expect me to pick anything else. This beast is amazing!" The first part of that comment clearly said playfully, but the second part was genuine. As was the massive grin on his face as he held out an arm pretending to shoot it. "...but seriously you designed that? That's pretty bad ass. I'll be sure to let you know how it goes in the field." With a nod he'd lift his scroll to snap a picture of it. Being sure to not get any of the proprietary components and just the gun itself he'd even show Pearl the picture and ask. "Mind if I send this to my sister and Ivory? Gotta brag about this thing!"

From there the conversation would shift a bit at first to the particulars of the gun. "Sure, though I must admit again my firearms knowledge is quite limited so if you have any prototypes or something that can replicate the feel of it, I could probably give you a better answer to customizations after the fact." Luckily, he had no problem admitting to his weaknesses and drawbacks.

Though, they wouldn't linger on that topic long as Pearl hit a bit of a sensitive spot for him right now. "Ahh yes... the million-lien question." Taking a moment to lean back against the worktable behind them he'd sigh. "I took an 'oddjob' so to speak right out of the Academy to be able to show I was capable. Unfortunately, it’s amazing how you go from king of the castle at Beacon to just another junior huntsman overnight." With a shrug he wasn't mad about it and his tone clearly was matter-a-fact. "...as for future prospects. I'm honestly not sure. I was looking for solid work here in Vale. So, I may hit up my sister's guild. Also, I got word that Ava and Shana might be returning to town soon. So..." With a bit of a chuckle, he'd end up cutting himself off. "...long story short I don't have much of a solid plan. So sure, if you've a contact or an opportunity I would absolutely love to hear ya out." Again, there was no pride or issue with getting the hook up from a student. For starters Pearl wasn't your run of the mill student. Secondly, he just didn't care. Work was work and least he could do was potentially help her out as a payback at worst as a friend at best.

Pearl gave a short nod at his request to share a picture. It was a harmless gesture. It would take a genius to simply look at the gun and figure out the exact design and inner workings. Most people mistook the Chimera for a shotgun/mace combination weapon with no proper melee transformation. They didn't realize the blades also served a purpose in stabilizing charged dust shots from the weapon. An aspect she hadn't explained to him as of yet, but she'd go over the additional capabilities during the construction and modification process. Since it required an aura trigger, there was no danger in not telling him right away.

“Ahh, the feeling of going from being the big fish in a small pond to being a minnow in the ocean. I'm certainly intimately familiar with that feeling.” She could still remember the sound of steel shattering like glass the first time she'd fought a huntsman class threat. A falcata breaking through one's metal limb was a hard thing to forget. Though that was nothing compared to the sensation of those same weapons running her through.

“As for opportunities, I do have one, though this weapon is available to you either way and the price isn't going to go up if you decide you don't want the job.” Pearl turned to look up at him and leaned against the workstation with her arms crossed. Her voice took on a professional edge. “Eburnean Acquisition and Logistics needs a huntsman on its permanent roster. Hiring out on a temporary basis via bounty boards is costly and inconsistent. Rarely do we have the opportunity to get to know the capabilities of the huntsman or huntress in question before we are simply out of options and have to hire whoever was willing to do the job. One even abandoning our security team during an encounter. This resulted in loss of life, part of the shipment, and the contract.” There was anger in her voice as the mention of losses, and it lingered in her tone as she continued.

“The huntsman or huntress we hire on will primarily be stationed here in Vale. While not on an active job, they would be training our security teams to better control their aura and fight on a similar level to proper academy trained huntsmen. These are men and women who will be fighting beside them on most given jobs, so it benefits them to train their comrades well. Active jobs will typically include protecting valuable shipments to remote locations or assisting in the acquisition of assets for the company or contracts. While not on an active job, a hired huntsman will have freedom to do other jobs as long as they do not present a conflict with EAL's business operations.”

Pearl sighed and rubbed the side of her neck with one hand. Now that the official spiel was done with, she'd speak plainly. “The job isn't without its dangers Jim, and I'm not just talking Grimm. Certain people have hired rogue huntsmen and huntresses to disrupt operations further from Vale. While nearly every worker on our payroll, even those not on our security team, have had their aura unlocked that doesn't put them on par with that level of threat. There are only a few people besides myself who worth for me that can deal with that kind of threat, and they can't assist with this side of my business.”

"Heh, yup, but you know perhaps more like... I don't know a trout? I'm still a pretty big guy." Grinning and laughing Jim could not help himself. Though her would nod his head so she knew that he did respect her comment.

As for the rest of what Pearl had to say it caught him off guard a bit. He had no idea that she actually did have need a huntsman on a permanent or very least long-term basis. Listening it honestly sounded kinda like a dream job. Which made him wonder why anyone out abandoned it right in the middle of the bounty. In fact, as she got a little edge to her tone, he'd interject himself and go. "Wow, that's fucking bull... Cass told me that these kinds of thing happened, but damn. You'd think after all the stuff we go through at the academies people would respect the job more." Despite how nonchalant Jim could be when he made a commitment or if something needed to be done, he saw it through.

He would remain quiet and listen to the rest. Even the warnings about danger. Which was too be expected, but he appreciated her honesty all the same. The thought of taking on a fellow huntsman was one of those things every knew was a part of the job. However, no one enjoyed talking about. Fortunately, despite being young he was no slouch, and hopefully graduating near the top actually meant something beyond a pat on the back.

Once she was done Jim would think for a moment and then say. "Well, first off thank you so much for the offer. It’s really flattering that you’d be willing to trust me with such a roll. As for the job itself. I love the proposition and it is definitely something I'm looking for. Stability, freedom, field work, hell even all those hours I spent helping younger students sounds like will come bac to help." There was a long smile running across his face as he kept nodding. "I guess I have just a couple questions then. One, with my team coming back into town I'm certain they will be looking for work as well. Could it be more than a one-person job?" Based on her response he would then say. "...because it sounds like a hell of an opportunity. Though I will be very up front with you that their coming back has shifted my priorities slightly." Lifting a hand, he'd make sure to clarify. "...and by that, I mean as far as what job I take. Whatever one I do I will be committing to!" That final sentence was said with a nod and conviction, so she knew he wasn't bullshitting her.

It was a small consolation to hear his own frustration, maybe even anger, at what had befallen that mission. It wouldn't bring back those lost, but she couldn't dwell on it more than she already had. It wasn't coldness but necessity to move on. Drinks and stories had been shared, families cared for, and funerals held with what could be recovered. Those who worked for her were loyal because they knew she would see to it that they were protected, that those who hurt them would pay, that their families would be provided for if the worst were to happen but that meant moving forward. She had a job to do.

Pearl focused on keeping her face passive as it started to sound like Jim was about to let the offer pass by. His words sounded so similar to the practiced way the academy had taught their huntsmen to be to pass up a job in the politest way possible. When disappointment didn't come, her eyebrows rose in shock and she stopped mid-nod as if she was already about to accept him turning the job down. She opened her mouth soundlessly once, then twice as she tried to put her thoughts into words. Pearl brought her fist up to her mouth as she pondered the possibilities. Usually her wits didn't let her down, but the possibility of four huntsmen on the roster, and more than that, an actual team that knew how to work with one another? Wasn't one a medic... One was. The Atlesian.

It also sounded like her answer might very well dictate whether she ended up at square one. “Truthfully Jim, I'm considering you for this position because I know your reputation. You're capable, trustworthy, and you'll do what's necessary for the greater good even if it means the rules may have to be broken. Hiring you on as well as your team is a fantastic opportunity, however I don't know if they will be on the same page as you for this. What's more is...” Pearl sighed and shook her head. She couldn't start with secrets. “The man who betrayed my people was an Atlesian. Former military huntsman. As you can imagine, he has some things to answer for and I've no intention of being gentle when he's brought in.”

There was a definite smile lingering on his face while Pearl spoke. Despite being a personality that could easily slip into arrogance he had almost always been humble. So, the genuine praise was really appreciated. He'd be even more excited when she revealed that she could potentially take on more than just him. Of course, like with most things there was a 'but' attached to it. Though in a different way. Most of a caution than anything and a valid one potentially at that.

When she had concluded Jim would nod his head and think for a moment. Then going in a bit of a backwards order he'd address that finally concern. "Out of all of us Shana may be the one that doesn't need a gig. That said..." Sighing he'd acknowledge. "...I can definitely understand the reservations. However, I'm not sure if you ever got a chance to meet her, but Shana of all of us would probably want to see him returned for justice. I trust her, I trust all of them implicitly. As for the being gentle part. Listen I know there are times when someone needs to look away. However, maybe when I learn a little more about the individual. I can give better advice." It was with that comment that he actually started to think up a plan that might be mutually beneficial for all parties.

"So, here's what I'm thinking. It sounds like you could really use something now. So, what if I signed on for let's call it three months, or well a better length of time may be. How long were you planning on training them?" He'd give her a moment to answer, and then continue. "During this time what I’ll do is gauge my teams’ interest and let you know after the first month if they wish to be involved or not. If they do, we'll bring them on board. If they, won't I'll finish my contract with you and make sure your people are as ready as they can be." With that he'd raise his hand and say. "Now I realize that deal really favors me, so likewise if you happen upon a candidate that you think is better suited for the position. No hard feelings if you let me go."

With that he'd smile and a say. "So, would an agreement along those line be agreeable? Also, I'm just coming up with this off the top of my head. Please feel free to tweak or counteroffer."

Shana, that was the name of the Atlesian on team JAHC, or more specifically the former Atlesian Military. Truly, Jim's team could have had three Atlesians, but that wasn't where her hangup really was. The list of what she'd lost to the Atlesian military and those associated with it was too long to easily look the other way. The pain in her chest and the anger threatening to rise up made her want to refuse the offer on the spot. It was their reputation, not only Jim's but his teams that caused her to hold her tongue and consider the offer. There was a silence that lasted a couple breaths as she thought about it.

Jim's offer was a generous counter to what she offered. Ideally, Jim wanted to work with his team. While few huntsmen formed a career around their teammates, those with the strongest bonds often tried. He wanted that, to fight beside them and to stand shoulder to shoulder. If he could do that working for Pearl, he'd be happy. If he couldn't, he'd take his capabilities elsewhere. Three months wasn't enough time. It just meant she'd be right back to this position once the time had passed.

“I need them capable, but I also need them to trust the person or persons I've hired. I want them able to hold their own against huntsman class threats. Most of my security team doesn't have formal training, and the combat academies tend to brush off older applicants and push them towards military or police service.” Not that she didn't have people working for the police force now. Having a more direct connection made her organizations manipulation of information to take out competitors so much easier and cleaner. “Three months simply isn't enough time for that, and that means you'd be leaving during one of the busiest times of the year. I need you at least until Beacon's winter break where I can take over guard duties for a time while we find a replacement. Give me at least six months, and then if your team is willing, I'll strongly consider taking them on as well. Even Shana despite my misgivings towards former Atlas military.”

When Pearl needed a moment to think he would give it. Contrary to popular belief Jim wasn't stupid, at times foolish? Yes, but outright stupid no. Which meant that he knew that he was asking for a lot of concessions. What he didn't realize what just how much distrust Pearl had for Atlesians. Though with all the talk he wondered. Everyone knew Shana was from there as it was basically plastered all over her. However, it would be curious if she knew that actually his team was three fourths Atlesians and the one that wasn't may as well have been an honorary one. Then again, he may have been born there, but he was Vale through and through these days.

After a few when the faunus did finally pipe back up Jim would give her the full attention she deserved. By the sound of it all it sounded like she was expecting some serious trouble. That or she was just being extra cautious which was also something he could respect. While he certainly never came close to owning his own business, he could understand her wariness. This responsibility had been thrust on her and she had already been burned one pretty hard. When it came to her counteroffer Jim only had to think about it for the briefest of moments.

"You have yourself a deal." Extending a hand Jim would smile widely and say. "...I'll do everything in my power to make the most of the six-months though hopefully all goes well, and this can become an even more permanent arrangement. As for my team was, I'll talk with each of them as they get settled back into town. If they are interested I can put them in touch with you as well as provide any non-proprietary details that are okay with you." It felt good making deals like this. As he actually felt like a ‘real’ huntsman. Taking on not just bounties but an actual career or at least a potential one. Either way, he would then ask. "So, should we make it official then, or is there anything else?" Luckily he wasn’t playing poker or holding out for something better, because the expression on his face would have shown just how excited he was by this prospect.

There it was, a touch of salvation to her sanity. Six months was far longer than most huntsman contracts. Even three months had been a long one when you compared it to the the freedom of freelance work, but for a huntsman without a reputation, freelance work was usually limited to basic guard duty or clearing centinel nests for a pittance. Maybe she should consider speaking with the Headmaster about encouraging students to pick up that bounty type? She stopped herself from going too far from that tangent and a soft sigh left her lips.

“It won't be official until you sign a contract, but I'll have someone in legal draw one up for you. You're welcome to go over it on your own, have our legal team go over it with you, or find your own resources to make sure we're not screwing you over in writing. While it doesn't benefit us to screw over a huntsman via contract, I'd still encourage you have someone you trust or have hired look it over.”
He would likely never understand just how much of a relief having someone she could trust on for even half a year would be for her. Her security team would be well trained and capable by then. Enough so that she might not even need to work with them over the winter, but she'd be prepared.

“As for proprietary information, largely avoid discussing patrol, shipping, and trade routes, scheduling, staffing, product being shipped, security systems and procedures, and the like. Mostly all common sense, but that will be covered in more detail via contract.” Where he was excited enough that she had felt the need to encourage him to still cover his bases, for her it was relief that was clear on her face and the way she had leaned back against the workstation. “Pretty sure that's everything besides sorting out your new shotgun, though that might take a little time as well.”

Following along with her comments Jim would chuckle lightly. It would be clear by the look in his eyes that he was amped up for this venture. Though to her point it would be best for him to have someone look it over. Something that quite frankly he probably would not have thought of on his own. Yet another part of this new life that he would have to get accustom too. For better or worse Beacon may have demanded a lot, but they basically took care of everything for you. Whereas being a huntsman was about the freest one could be in this crazy ass world. Which naturally carried severe consequences both positive and negative ways depending on how well you respected that freedom.

So, with that as well as with her further explanation on some of the do's and don'ts he'd smile. "Sounds good. I can probably have my sister look at it or at the very least point me in the right direction. Especially given her new job these days." After that he would take a half step back and breathe a sigh of relief. It was almost like a huge weight had been lifted off his shoulders. There had been so many unknowns thus far in his short career. Ranging from broad questions like who he would be working for too personal things like would he be able to rekindle his team. Hell, even mundane things like would he be able to afford a place. Jim certainly did not imagine his illustrious career being conducted from his sister's couch.

Looking back to the display he would cross his arms. The smile still lingering as he made a little joke now that they had agreed at least verbally to some terms. "So, used the shotgun as bait and gained my employee for half a year... not bad." There was a grin on his face and his tone was clearly playful. Though he would quickly follow that up with a far more genuine comment. "...but seriously. I really do appreciate both the opportunity and your faith in me. Don't worry though, I promise to hold up my end of the deal. Speaking of which..." He'd chuckle again. "...I know I may have had a few less than pristine reputations at Beacon. However, tell your people to be ready. One thing I do take seriously is training. So, hope they're ready for it." Sure, he had some genetic and semblance related gifts in terms of physical talents. However, quite a bit of it also came from hard work and fine-tuned training. Something he could at least partially pass on to his new crew.

Pearl couldn't help but wonder where the rumors and jokes about Jim being an dumb had come from. Everyone made mistakes, those with more experience under their belt often made far more than most. He wasn't hesitant about listening to advice, and he was quick to consider his sister, an experienced huntress for help. More importantly, Cassandra was head of a huntsman guild if she wasn't mistaken. That contract would be looked at with a scrutinizing eye. Pearl couldn't fight a smile at the realization that Jim's contract would likely become a different rumor. He would be getting paid more than a standard contract.

As the word “bait” left Jim's mouth, she laughed and wagged a metal finger in denial. “Now, now! Bait would have been if I called you to offer it in the first place to have you come in.” She pointed towards herself with her thumb. “It's more that I'm an opportunist, and wanted to find out if someone I felt I could count on for the job needed it in the first place.” There was no harm in his joke, or worry that he'd take offense to what she'd said. “And don't worry, I know some of your reputation is unwarranted. How hard you trained, and how well you did so is a big selling point here.”

“Besides, you're one of the few people I know who almost pushed themselves as hard as I have when it comes to self improvement, and there's even fewer people I'd trust to push my people without breaking them.” Her people weren't soldiers. They weren't huntsmen in training like a Beacon student. What they were was loyal, and they had faith in her. That faith had let themselves push themselves for what they believed in. “They'll be ready.”

Jim appreciated the banter and nodded his head. "Fair point and hell nothing wrong with being one of those. I think most at the Academy can claim a time where they were such." As for the rest he would happily let that go with only a non-verbal answer. After all he was never that big on bragging or showboating. Even if he did have a bit of an over-the-top style, it rarely had to do with 'trying' to draw attention to himself.

By the time Perl was done Jim would just make a fist and tap her on the upper arm. "That's what I like to hear and like I said. I'll do everything I can to manage and train them. As well as of course fulfill the other more direct roles you need of me." With that he would turn back to the Shotgun schematic. "Now... back to this..." Pointing up at the display he would point out a couple more things that he was really looking for. It was evident by the smile that was glue on his face that this had gone even better than anticipated. Not only that, but also the fact that he was seriously looking forward to wear this might end up going.
