Three fingers, and all hands clutched their guns.

Two fingers, nervous glances shared around.

One finger, the middle one.

In a split second a heavy boot crashed through the door. Her boot. The first shot hit his shoulder, his arm liberated from his body. It was still clutching the revolver it came with. The rattle beside her punched a bloodied line of daylight through a two foot length of the wall. Her mask was already filling with perspiration. The hazy rim of her visor obscured the blurry black form of something approaching on her left, but not the glint of steel that moved through the air. Before it finished its mission, it froze in place. All it took was ten seconds, and as everything snapped back into place, she drove the butt of her shotgun right into the wrist. The flimsy piece of metal clattered to the floor, its sharpened blade and black handle crushed under that selfsame heavy boot, and the metallic ring of a shell casing fell beside it.

The distinct clang of the shotgun's fore-end impacting the receiver made everything stand still again. This time, though... It wasn't her.

Just before her the bewildered criminal had fallen back onto his haunches, clambering back to his knees, hands above his head, which was great for him, because the black metal barrel was aiming right for his eye.

Honeydew jerked her head to the side, and the other soldier on her right let his submachine gun hang from its strap around his neck. In a moment, he'd zip-tied the man's hands behind his back. Another quick job... These thug types were too sure of themselves. She had to wonder, though, what it was that had the upper echelons so buggered.

When the last threat was neutralized, she pulled her helmet off, looking around with a keen eye. Yeah... That smell. She recognized it anywhere.

"Drugs,"
she breathed to herself as though the word were a swear, and she set her helmet down on the table. It had been a few weeks since this trash had begun spreading through Mantle... She could only guess at the damage it had already done. She turned back to the door, where a third soldier waited.

"Get me the Colonel. It's worse than we thought," she ordered, and the man in his silver armor saluted and was away.

She tore the bedsheet hanging in front of the window from the wall, looking out across the rooftops of Mantle, a column of black smoke rising lazily in the distance. Idiots... She'd have more work to do today. The Captain's insignia caught the light as her shoulders turned, and she stalked from the room in a hasty gait, intent to make that Scroll call.
