The workshop was, surprisingly enough, empty. No fires were being stoked, no hammers were being clanked, no sheets of steel were being cut. Aside from a teacher looking in now and again to make sure that the place wasn't being misused, all Nocte had by way of company was the dust, the dirt, and whatever scraps the previous occupants had neglected to clean up. This suited her just fine. Her project wasn't one that she was keen on being disturbed while doing, and the more concentration she was allowed, the better.

Nocte's workspace being so neatly-organised should have surprised nobody. Even with the mess and chaos inherent in an environment where things were being crafted, and materials were moved about every second, it didn't even look like Nocte had touched the tools or resources on her workbench. Her neatness aside, however, it was clear that she was working on something. Every now and again, between the sounds of tools whirring, clinking, or grinding against her latest project, Nocte muttered something to herself, and scrawled in her notebook. The notes - incomprehensible though they may have been to an outsider - were no less tidy than the space she worked in.

Eventually, the sound of moving tools came to a stop, punctuated by a low, sharp, grunt of frustration. Nocte stood back, and though her face changed little, it was evident that she wasn't pleased by whatever it was that had transpired. Arms crossed and foot tapping, she glanced between her notes and the item before her, muttering everything from calculations to elements to the names of various historical scholars to herself. With her frustration came concentration too - with how focussed she was on the workbench, it was highly unlikely that she would notice anyone or anything approaching, let alone react.

Lin was giddy, she had just finished classes and had raced to her locker to retrieve her latest little gadget she was working on.
She wasn't even sure what to call it yet, but this new rifle was sure to make her entire ammo economy a lot easier.
The compressor gun, as she was calling it for now, used a special type of bullet that by transforming like her weapons did could shift caliber and allow the gun to then adapt different firing modes.
Truly a genius idea!
...if only she knew how to execute it.

But that's what she was trying to figure out!
Lin floated into the workshop, tools and gear in her hands, the weight of it all negated via her semblance, so even with her tiny stature Lin could carry them around.

Lin noticed another person there, she gave them a silent greeting, a wave and smile as she floated past.
Then putting her gear on the table, spreading it out and keeping some of it floating for ease of use.
Slamming open her toolbox, Lin took out her bullet kit and started tinkering away at the small but crucial piece of her design, firstly settling in on making a few different calibers and looking how much space she had to work with.

The silent greeting went unnoticed. That much, upon even a casual observation, should not have been a shock. Nocte's concentration was focussed completely and utterly on the project before her that, from the looks of things, had barely even passed the blueprint stage. Judging by her frustration, it would have been a fair assumption to think that it would go back to the blueprint stage shortly too. Nocte muttered to herself intermittently, a little louder this time, and it was clear that she was referring to her project by how she spoke of parts, designs, and weight. But any details beyond that were inaudible.

She was quickly shaken out of that reverie when a loud crashing ripped through the air, however. Though her body jolted only slightly, her ears stood straight, stiffening upwards for a moment as she calmed herself back down. Then, looking as though she'd not about jumped out of her skin, Nocte turned around, hoping to ascertain the source of the noise, and address it promptly. An internal sigh of relief was breathed when she noticed that it was just someone else putting their things down, rather than a shelf or some equipment collapsing. An incident in the workshop was the last thing she needed.

"My apologies," she said flatly, now looking to the stranger, "I didn't see you come in." Nocte's eyes glanced over to what exactly had caused the noise, and though she did not admit it outright, the glance she stole at the items laid out told that she was curious.

Lin raised her head as the girl next to her spoke up, she just waved off her apology, nothing to be sorry for, her floating in like that was bound to make her go unnoticed.
Though she did note the posture of the other girls body and ears, seemed that her slamming open the toolbox did startle her, which got a slight smirk out of Lin.

Lin settled back to work, tinkering with the mechanism inside one of the bullets, with a bit of force and a click the mechanism was put together, the bullet now in one piece as Lin then grabbed a cable and applied some electricty to the bullet, which miracilously increased in size as Lin then grabbed a second cable and applied a shock from the other side...she did it cautiously, and looked away as then with a BANG! the bullet shattered back into it's many pieces leaving them scattered across Lin's workplace and left her to gather them back up...before tossing the thing into a small bag lovingly titled "scrap/failures."

It seemed that the incident had passed without incident, but not without embarrassment. There was no hiding the reaction she knew she'd given, but Nocte was far from willing to dwell on it. Figuring it best to move on, she turned back to the project she'd left on the workbench, only to find that she'd lost her train of thought completely. It was hardly as if she had been on a roll before, but what little inspiration she had managed to scrounge together was no longer present. The shock of the stranger arriving had seen to that, though Nocte didn't hold it against her. It was hardly as if she could've known.

Sounds coming from the stranger's workbench intrigued Nocte, however. Curiosity got the better of her, and with her focus on her own project shaken, she looked over to see what was being tinkered with on the other bench. The methods used seemed unorthodox, to say the least, but that was part of what drew her in. Even when a sharp crack rang out, Nocte only grew more interested in trying to figure out what was going on. She stepped forward a little and spoke, her tone a neutral one.
"Might I ask what you're doing?" She said. Judging by her tone alone, it was clear she was curious, rather than annoyed.

Lin really had not expected to get any further attention from her fellow student, she didn't sound annoyed at the noise Lin and her project were making, but kind of curious, well she was happy to explain!
The question was how she would accomplish this, though ?
Lin turned around rummaging in another bag, this one tilted "WIPS/Prototypes"
As she pulled out a bullet that looked similar to the one she just had, this one seemed to feature a clicking mechanism of some kind, Lin had only really discontinued this method of the size changing bullet as figuring a out a way to trigger this mechanism when the bullet was inside a magazine was impossible, but it worked well enough for demonstrations.
Lin then also produced a 40mm standard issue revolver and a 9mm submachine gun.
As she loaded the bullet into the revolver and spun it around in the magazine for demonstration purposes, then took it out.
She then clicked the mechanism and the bullet shrunk, to less than half it's previous size and with a swift motion was stuffed into the submachine gun.

Lin the pulled out her text to speech device, typing away for just a second, before a synthetic yet oddly fitting voice for someone of Lin's stature spoke.
"I'm trying to figure out a way to make a bullet that can change caliber, for a gun that can transform to shoot in different firing modes, this mechanism works fine for demonstrations, but I need something else to actually have multiple bullets in a magazine change size, so I was trying to activate the gravity dust inside these bullets via a positive and negative electric pulse...you heard the results."
The voice explained, to which Lin just sighed with a somewhat disappointed smile.

Nocte watched with unabashed interest, though it was a little difficult to tell. She focused intently on the explanation and the item in question, nodding and stroking her chin in thought, but her expression didn't change even an inch. She barely even seemed to blink, such was how stone-faced she was throughout the whole affair. Nevertheless, she didn't seem to miss a beat when Lin spoke. A glance to the side to confirm that it was indeed Lin that was speaking, maybe, but her concern seemed to be reserved solely for the work that was being undertaken.

"Fascinating..." She said quietly, muttering - seemingly to herself - as she observed the parts that Lin was working with. At home, it would have been a team of engineers working in a lab or a workshop stocked with whatever it was they needed to keep the Fabri Arms Company's prestigious reputation going. But there she was, working with the school's (still fairly impressive) facilities, with what appeared to be the gunsmithing equivalent of odds and ends. It was a difference that was quite jarring to her, but even so, it was no less interesting for it.

She was silent for a moment more, before pulling out a round from a pouch she had off to the side. She slid it over to Lin, but didn't look as she did so, instead wanting to focus on the work performed. "Have you considered an altered sabot-style bullet? The system already allows for sub-calibre rounds to be fired from larger weapons without sacrificing performance, so maybe there's a way to use it to work in the limited space that a casing has." She was silent for a second more, before turning back to Lin. "My apologies. I'm rambling already, and I don't eve have your name." A hand was extended, as well as a calm - but still quite focused - gaze. "Nocte Fabri. It's a pleasure to meet you."

Lin looked a little confused at Nocte, there was barely a reaction at all, had she bored Nocte, was Nocte too caught off guard by the text to speech device, had she rambled too long ?

No, she instead got a suggestion, something that Lin was aware of, so she hastily typed into her TTS Device
"That's a great idea, however, I want to do things my way and secondly..."
Lin grabbed her gun and loaded both the Sabot Round and her Compression Round, in that order.
Swiftly aiming it at two soda cans stationed conveniently on the other end of the room, as improvised target practice.
The Sabot Round going off first, easily ripping a huge hole into the can.
Yet, as the Compression Bullet hit, the can seemed to implode, as the gravity dust loaded into the bullet crushed it together, leaving it as a small aluminum ball.
"Mine hit just a bit harder."
The text to speech voice noted, with a giggle coming from Lin herself.

Lin put the gun back on the table, extending a hand to Nocte and shaking hers.
"I'm Lin, Lin Motley, glad to meet you."

Letting go, Lin then floated over to Nocte's table, inspecting it curiously as she hovered a few feet above it, legs crossed.
"Enough about my work, though, what are you working on ?"

“Firepower. Of course.” She muttered, nodding thoughtfully as she scrutinised the scene before her. As handy as sabot rounds were, there was no getting around the fact that the other option was leagues more powerful. While not a concern against something as squishy as a person, when it came to beast that were the size of bullheads and twice as armoured, Nocte understood well that every round counted. She made a metal note to think on it later - it was quite an intriguing question, and one that certainly wouldn't be solved with just a glance and a few offhanded suggestions. Besides, a question had been asked, and it would be remiss of her not to answer.

Nocte didn't hesitate to shake Lin's hand. She remained stoney-faced, with a firm grip and shake befitting someone who'd gone through the rigmarole more times than she could count, but she suspected that neither of them were particularly interested in anything more than the bare minimum of formalities anyway. "Nocte Fabri." Came the reply - short and to-the-point, but not delivered with any kind of intent to be rude. Nocte simply cared more to discuss the projects they were both working on, and perhaps get some feedback on hers. She'd hit something of a wall with her tests - ironic, given what she was working on.

"Perhaps a demonstration would be quicker." Nocte said, taking it off the table. Now in plain view of them both, it was a little clearer what exactly it was. What appeared to be several layers of fairly thick metal were folded onto each other, themselves strapped onto Nocte's arm. Her machine gun was held in the other, though absent any rounds, and with the safety switched on. Nocte's arm jutted forward, and in only seconds, the lengths of metal on her arm unfolded into something akin to a riot shield, a brace on one side that her gun slotted snugly into.

"A deployable shield." she commented, should it not have been immediately obvious. "I don't imagine it'll see much use against Grimm, but it's not just those creatures we are tasked with hunting down." She folded it back up again, and one of its problems became immediately obvious - the speed. "As you can see, the mechanism is far faster when deploying than when folding up. This is not the most pressing matter, however - it likely won't need to be put away until the threat has passed. The issue is weight."

The shield was unfastened and handed off to Lin for her to try on, all while Nocte elaborated. "Even with Aura, the weight makes it unwieldy. I'd rather not rely on gravity dust if possible, however. The less moving parts this has, the better."

Lin watched with piqued interest, floating quite close to Nocte observing the construction with a raised eyebrow, some kind of armor ?
It looked...no sounded unwieldy, especially with that big...beautiful...machine gun.
Lin's attention drifted from what Nocte was showing her to the gun, as the floating girl was running numbers and all kinds of questions ran through the weapon nut's head.

When the shield unfolded, she got a bit startled and flew backwards, oh, cool, a riot shield, weren't those readily available to buy ?
Lin asked herself as she poked at the metal sheets.
Oh, the folding part was important.

Lin scratched her chin in silence, grabbing the shield with relative ease, only faltering for a second and getting pulled down, before reflexively cancelling the shields' gravity, having it hover midair and letting Lin spin it around how she pleased for inspection.

Until she finally pulled out her text to speech device, typing away for just a second.
"Why not use hard light dust instead ?"

The suggestion of hard light Dust was met with a slow - yet immediate - shake of her head.
"I'd considered it," Nocte said, her voice taking on a slightly more resigned tone, "But it's not what I'm looking for. Even a basic hardlight shield creates multiple single points of failure. And I'm sure you've seen the cost of hard light Dust these days. As cumbersome as this is, it's a more reliable option when push comes to shove." As if to prove her point, she motioned towards the blueprints on the table that she was working off/ They were the very epitome of professional - it was clear that she had practice drawing this sort of thing, with even the sketched parts nigh-indistinguishable from a computer program's designs.

"Some springs, a few latches, and a locking mechanism. That's all that's inside there, and that keeps it reliable." Reliable, but hefty, as Lin had no doubt found out. She studied her designs more, scanning her eyes over the length and breadth of the page. Her foot tapped - it seemed she was thinking about something, and thinking intensely. Her reverie was only broken when she spoke, and even then, she did so while looking at her work rather than Lin herself. "I assume you've been in the field a few times. Have you fought people much? What kind of guns would you say are more common amongst them?"

Well she had a point, dust was very expensive, while Lin wasent rich she did have a steady supply of money thanks to her parents and their respective buisiness so she was a bit better of than most of her students...but Nocte didn't look to bad of herself, the blueprints and equipment she were carrying were really high grade, better than like 90% of equipment she had seen in Vale.
But yeah fair, good ol reliable hinges and winge...just super clunky, how would one make this any better ?
...wait...
Lin tapped down another idea until Nocte asked her about field work, Lin had not been in the field for a lot, she only really fought Grimm and half the time that was just to test out her new creations.
Ela did though, her sisters usually just talked about handguns, submachine guns and shotguns, some grenades and assault rifles here and there.
Lin typed away relaying this information, though also mentioning that Nocte was better off asking more expiernced students like her big sister.

But then Lin typed away again, this time mentioning her idea.
Magnets!
If she could generate a negative pulse to open the shield and then a positive one to close it and the plates staying in place with a simple locking mechanism, that would be an elegant solution, it would require some electricity but the system wouldn't be nearly as complex as a hard light dust system, just would need to watch out too keep her scroll away from her shield when activating or deactivating it.

Nocte mumbled the list of weapons to herself, and though she made a mental note to ask someone with more experience later, her focus seemed to be entirely on drawing up some charts regarding various ammo types onto her scroll. Only a few words could be made out - ones regarding the power of common rifle calibres, if those few snippets were anything to go off of. She was only shaken out of her reverie by the mention of magnets, but that seemed to be enough to give her pause, and an idea too.

"Of course..." She said, though from the tone of it, it seemed that she was mostly just thinking out loud. "Titanium plates... expensive, but treated right... I'd need to alloy it for the magnets..." It was only partway through her ramblings that she remembered that she had company, at which point she cleared her throat in a manner that seemed somewhat sheepish. "Apologies. I think your idea may have some merit, but I wanted to be sure." Nocte stepped aside, letting the blueprint she'd been working off previously be seen by both of them. "Perhaps if I made the shield from titanium instead of steel, and used maglocks to create a quick-deploy system, it would work better than this iteration. The metal would be expensive, and alloying it would certainly not be cheap either. But it's light enough to carry around, and strong enough to repel small arms fire until Aura can be activated or more permanent cover found. And, maintained properly, it's one-time investment, unlike Dust."

Lin couldn't help but put on the smuggest of smiles, floating a few inches higher with her nose held high and arms crossed, hearing another experienced craftsman praise her idea felt pretty good, Lin just rubbed the bridge of her nose, as she listend to Nocte ramble, once more.
The plan Nocte explained already sounded amazing, but Lin did think of one issue, one that could be extremely bad if Nocte didn't account for it.

Lin floated forward, pointing at the handle of the shield and then towards the electronics of it all, if the entire thing were to be made of metal and feature an electromagnetic mechanism, a short circuit or overload would be horrible, it wouldn't just disable the shield but also heavily damage Nocte and since a lot of people had access to something as simple as electricity dust that was a likely occurrence.

Lin then quickly floated over to her own table, grabbing a few materials, rubber and so on for the handle, offering them with a smirk.

Of course. EMPs, Lightning Dust, unforeseen Semblance effects - there was any number of things that could go wrong, and the furrowed brow that Nocte took on showed that the problem wasn't lost on her. She remained silent for a few seconds, looking over the blueprints, before letting out a small sigh and looking back towards Lin.
"I'll need to do some thinking on this later. It would seem this isn't a problem I'm going to solve in a single afternoon." A frustrating thing to admit, to be sure, but Vale wasn't built in a day. That aside, going back to square one and examining the design at its most basic level had its benefits too, chief among them being spotting any more fundamental flaws and weaknesses in the design.

Nocte took the materials gladly, and nodded sharply. "Thank you. For the help as well. It's appreciated." Stern and stony though Nocte may have sounded, she was no less grateful. Having somebody around that was just as passionate - and competent - with weaponry and associated paraphernalia as she was was something that she was happy about. Even if she didn't show it. "Let me know if I can be of assistance with your project. My materials are yours to use as well." It was hardly as if she was short on them. If the Fabri Arms company had anything to spare, it was brass and Dust.

Lin could hear the frustration in Nocte's voice, she understood it too well and just floated over to her side, with her legs folded, giving the upset faunus a few reassuring pats on her shoulder.

Lin's own expression lit up with excitement as she was offered the materials on Nocte's desk, she was tempted to sweep them all away with her semblance, but she was not going to be that rude, dramatically clearing her throat Lin simply took a few extra bullets and shells, ones that would be dissected to further her own experiment, while she was at it Lin would swoop some hard light and gravity dust, the former because it was rare and the latter because of the aforementioned experiment.

She floated over to her table, dumping the items on it with a bit of a cheeky grin towards Nocte as Lin settled down and began to once again work on her new bullets, one of which she tossed to Nocte.
"Maybe you have an idea on how to fix my issue ?"
The text to speech device asked.

Nocte had to admit, she'd expected a little more to be taken, but supposed that Lin knew better than her, regarding what was needed for the project. The offer remained open nevertheless, and Lin was welcome to help herself to anything else that was there... within reason. However, before Nocte could return to the issue of deployable shields and the electrocution thereof, Lin asked her about her own project. That was enough to have Nocte remain quiet, once again lost in thought as she ran through all the possibilities. Hand to her chin, she turned to the other side of the workbench, and stared intensely at what Lin was working with.

Though she intended to keep her thoughts to herself and speak only when she had something to say, Nocte's habits got the best of her, and she began to think out loud, speaking more to herself than she was to Lin.
"Biggest issue's going to be purpose..." She muttered, stepping a little closer to get a better view. "Too much variance between ammo for the same types of guns, let alone different ones... '' She paused suddenly, as if something had struck her both physically and mentally, before turning to Lin. It seemed she'd managed to catch herself too, and her expression turned to a more stoic one as she turned.

"What do you need this gun to do?" Was the first thing she asked, though she didn't give time for Lin to respond before elaborating. "Will this be anti-armour, for use against bigger Grimm? or would you say it's more for picking off mid-sized targets, such as Beringels and Ursas? My apologies if this sounds obvious to you, but my thinking is that we don't need a bullet that matches any size. Just a range of bullets that can adjust within a certain range."

She set two rounds onto the table - a handgun round that would normally see use in weapons like her Kestrel, and a bullet so large that it could likely double up as a club to beat someone with. "I wouldn't expect one to shrink or grow to match the other. The Dust it would take would be better suited to just making the bullet hit harder. But..." She placed two more rounds down - one suited to revolvers, and one suited to anti-personnel rifles. "...These might be more reasonable. I know it might not be the answer you're looking for, but I'll need more time if I'm to do anything more helpful. My apologies."

Lin did figure this part out already, she knew what typed of purpose she wanted this multi-gun to fulfill... but what caliber would be the best suited for each of the three roles she had in mind ?
Lin went through some options, but to all of them she could name downsides, maybe she could ask Nocte about that.
So Lin got to typing away again, she was also stuck looking at the club sized bullet on the desk, confused for just a second why Nocte would have something like this and then remembering the world they lived in, where creatures existed that needed continuous fire from artillery to get taken down effectively, owning anti-material bullets was optimal for self-defense.
"I had thought about what I want this gun to do, a method for dispatching armored targets, preferably a long ranged rifle, so I don't have to get close to said heavily armored target. One other mode would be something that can mow trough hordes of small to medium Grimm with relative ease, considering they love to employ swarm tactics, and last but not the least something I can use to defend myself against other people...without tearing them to shreds."
The computerized voice did it's best to say that last part in a sheepish manner, Lin also rubbing the back of her head a little, she had to have that option, her small frame really wasn't best for fighting against anyone, so guns were always the answer...well usually it was a taser, but a mild electric shock wasn't going to get a huntsman to back of, a 45 millimeter combustion dust round would.

Nocte muttered the brief back to herself, boiling everything that had been said to its barest components. The requirements were listed in her head, and she furrowed her brow in concentration, once more lost to her own train of thought as she was presented with a challenge. All that could reliably be made out for a long while was a litany of different ballistics-related terms - distances, calibres, types of rifles, and various other things that were tangentially related to the topic at hand. Eventually, she settled on something, and presented a rough sketch to Lin - ‘rough’ being the operative term.

Considering it had been drawn in only a few minutes, it was surprisingly detailed, and good enough at illustrating her point, but Lin wasn't going to be able to make any blueprints based off of those sketches alone.
"Try starting with a scout rifle as a base." Nocte said, pressing her finger to the rifle in the centre. "They're not as powerful as others that fire the same type of ammo, but they're light, they're compact, and they're strong and accurate enough to take out weaker Grimm without any issue. If you give it selective fire capabilities, then it should be able to function as a carbine rifle at lower calibres. And if you need something to deal with heavier foes…"

Her finger dragged across to the sketch in the centre. "...Have it extend into a DMR, and adapt the ammunition accordingly. It won't fire as quickly, but you'll reach longer distances and hit harder than you can with the scout or carbine." She drew back a little to let Lin inspect it properly, and waited with bated breath to hear what she thought.

Lin listened intently, her expression critical at first, as Nocte was contradicting the plans she had for her weapons a bit, but...what she said made sense!
Lin's eyes widened, this girl knew her guns really well!
At that moment Lin was glued to every word Nocte spoke, furiously scribbling down notes on her scroll as she herself was already thinking of ways to in cooperate these ideas, yet one thing did earn a quiet "hmmm" from Lin, the serious lack of BOOOM!
The thing tool she could use to wipe out of hordes of Grimm or send even the largest of them packing.
With the parts in place...the dust used and one of her own earlier designs coming back to mind, Lin, instead of giving an answer in words, turned her scroll for Nocte to see, she had copied Nocte's own scribbles, albeit in a more novice quality one could read all the relevant information, yet a third mode could be seen, one based on a previous design, Love Tap, her sister's weapon.

It was a rail gun, using the gravity and lightning dust already found within her gun to accelerate a mass of lead to punch trough anything that could possibly stand in the little engineer's way.
It was crude, for now, but the base concept made sense, using the gravity dust within the bullets as batteries to fuel this mode.
Lin peaked from behind the scroll, with a grin, her now looking for approval from Nocte.

"A railgun..." Nocte murmured, stroking her chin while she studied the design. There wasn't much to look at for the time being, so she only took a relatively brief glance at it, but the quick nod she gave was enough to show that she approved. "It might impact its weight, and power draw may be a concern, but I see the potential." She looked up, and for a moment, there was something glinting in her eyes. It was clear that she was at least interested in the design - but those paying close enough attention to her might have even seen something approaching eagerness in that usually stoic gaze.

"I should leave you to it, then." Nocte concluded. She didn't appear to be trying to exit the conversation - rather, she was simply being blunt, whether intentionally or not. "It looks as though it will be a rather intricate design, all things considered. Do let me know if I can help with anything else. It looks like it might be interesting to figure out." She meant it too. The gun and its ammo were a puzzle that, even if she wasn't the one to solve it, looked like it might have an intriguing solution nonetheless. And, though she'd not admit it, she figured some collaboration might do her own projects some good.

Lin grinned, as she grabbed the largest and heaviest object she could find from nearby, a toolbox that Nocte could hear was heavy with all the tools clinking inside of it, Lin lifted it up, struggling for a little bit until her semblance visibly washed over the box, as Lin let go, and it floated in the air Lin stretching out her hands for emphasis.
Weight clearly was not an issue for the little mute, just making her smile brighter towards Nocte, who she could tell was also excited about the idea even with her usually deadpan expression, Lin could see that glint in her eyes.

Yet, as deadpan and blunt as Nocte was, Lin understood, they were both mostly done exchanging what they could, showing their current projects, and now it was best to just continue working on them by themselves, a simple matter of too many cooks spoiling the broth, for now, she would no doubt ask Nocte for help if she needed it and was more than happy to provide her own assistance if Nocte needed her.
Lin simply gave her a thumbs up, she understood and with a smile towards her fellow crafter turned back to her workbench and restarted her efforts, drawing up more schematics of the guns that Nocte had mentioned and was writing down some notes on where she could even find the damn parts, she could ask Nocte, but she was just used to working with her scrapyard materials, plus it would be a bit of a waste to blow Nocte's high quality materials to kingdom come in her not that safe experiments.
